Located in Campbellton the Restigouche Hospital Center opened its doors in 1954 The hospital has 175 beds and offers specialized services in the field of mental health in both official languages on a provincial basis

The hospital provides services to a forensic clientele and treats the clientele found noncriminally responsible as well as patients requiring tertiary services in psychiatric rehabilitation on a mid to longterm basis It also offers care to psychogeriatric patients as well as for the intellectually challenged The Restigouche Hospital Center has an average of 225 admissions annually and its clientele is lodged in nine treatment units The acute psychiatry unit situated at the Campbellton Regional Hospital has over 400 admissions annually

The interdisciplinary services and programs offered to patients are considered one of the most important elements in their rehabilitation These services are organized in such a way as to achieve efficient treatment rehabilitation and a return to the community as soon as patients are able to make that transition

Over the years a number of patients have left the hospital to return to live with their families or have been placed in special care homes or nursing homes This effort has been ongoing since the early 60s and an increasing number of patients have effectively returned to live and work in their community The continuity of care for these patients is assured through the cooperation of hospital employees with the community mental health centres that maintain support to these patients
