Fundraising for Lady Minto Hospital has always been a vital activity in the hospitals history

Lady Minto herself was a prominent philanthropist who instituted a fund for the building of cottage hospitals in remote districts across the country The Guild of Sunshine was the forerunner of the Lady Minto Hospital Auxiliary on Salt Spring Island and the first organization to begin fundraising When the sixbed hospital opened in 1914 the Guild had already donated 600 to the building fund a considerable sum of money in those days

quotI hope that in all the exuberance of youth and prosperity you will never forget the old folks at home the parents of us all possibly oldfashioned possibly not catching on to the new ideas as quickly as you do but full of responsibility full of the hardearned experiences of many generations and thank God as strong as ever stillquot

History

The Foundation is pleased to announce the publication of
Lady Minto Gulf Islands Hospital Salt Spring Island

A History written by Charles Kahn and Sue Mouat This is a story of a caring generous community that very early on recognized the need for the local provision of reliable highquality health care Beginning with a group of highpowered women and a benevolent doctor who provided land and leadership to establish the first small hospital on Salt Spring Island for all of the Gulf Islands the hospital has benefited from many determined dynamic and entrepreneurial individuals and groups who have alternately taken leadership and supporting roles in providing a small community with a firstclass facility

This little book pays tribute to some of these people and groups as it tells the fascinating story of how much can be accomplished as a result of hard work and sheer determination Of course the story does not end here it is ongoing as the hospital continues to grow to serve an everlarger population The book is well illustrated with photos and full of anecdotes from a wide variety of islanders
