About the Clinic
The University of Alberta Glen Sather Sports Medicine Clinic is a multidisciplinary facility housed in the Physical Education Complex on the University of Alberta Campus Staffed by physicians and physical therapists who specialize in the assessment diagnosis treatment and rehabilitation of orthopedic and sports related injury the Clinic was originally designed to serve the needs of both competitive and recreationally active individuals alike The Clinics interdisciplinary approach to care its function approach to rehabilitation and the emphasis placed on patient education and home programming lent to the success of our practice and the continued demand for service not only in the area of sport medicine but in the care of musculoskeletal injury arising from other causes

Today our physical therapy and medical services are in demand by individuals within the City of Edmonton Northern and Central Alberta Our patients access our services through medical referral and direct access Our physician referral base originates from across the entire City and indeed when examined closely reaches throughout the province Patient care encompasses management of acute and chronic orthopedic and musculoskeletal injury rehabilitation of injury and progressive functional restoration to activities of daily living The goal of all rehabilitation is to allow return to a healthy lifestyle Assessment of a patients condition is done in a global manner fostering identification of the cause of injury thus minimizing the chance of reoccurrence A close link is maintained with the Clinics medical community as well as that in the private sector providing continuity of care for the patients We have over the years developed excellent working relationships with other allied health professionals which contributes to the quality of care we are able to deliver to our patients

Quite apart from the clinical aspect of our mandate is that of education To this end we continue to work with the three faculties with which we are aligned to deliver current and problem solving based educational experiences for the students and fellows who serve elective and placement time within our facility Included in these rotations are orthopaedic residents physiatry residents family practice residents orthopaedic fellows sports medicine fellow medical students physical therapy students and physical education students

History

History
Preliminary planning for the establishment of a multifaceted sports medicine clinic at the University of Alberta began in 1986 with the official opening of the Glen Sather Sports Medicine Clinic being celebrated by the inaugural Carnival of Champions on October 11 1988 The concentrated effort of many people from a number of University Faculties as well as the public sector contributed to the realization of a Centre destined to be worldrenowned

At the time of its inception the Clinic was staffed by 3 fulltime and 3 parttime physiotherapists including Nancy Jette Chisholm and Fraser Dods The medical staff included the Clinics Director Dr David C Reid Dr Gordon Cameron Dr Jeff Robinson and Dr Harvey Sternberg Throughout the years the demands on the Clinic have led to the hiring of more professional staff with the present professional staff numbers being dictated largely by the physical capacity of the facility

The clinic remains today a highly recognized facility in the delivery of medical and rehabilitative care to athletes from all levels of sport Services are provided by medical doctors physical therapists an orthotist acupuncturists massage therapists and an xray technologist The daytoday administrative services involved with managing the Clinic are performed by a staff of four fulltime and 2 parttime employees
