History

HOCAs History
Three credit cards and three doctors that is how HOCA made its humble beginnings
Fiftythousand patients later the pioneering efforts of three cancer specialists in 1988 to establish one of Brisbanes leading haematology and oncology clinics has been more than realised

Doctors Trevor Olsen Ian Bunce and Paul Eliadis pooled their resources and with three credit cards between them opened the Heamatology amp Oncology Clinics of Australia HOCA on the Wesley Hospital campus the same year that Southbank hosted World Expo 88 and Queensland trialled daylight saving

However unlike the fun and frivolity of Expo 88 the cause of their work was to create quality care for patients diagnosed with cancer and diseases of the blood with the least possible disruption to their lifestyles through excellence in treatment education research support and value creation HOCA now has over 20 Medical Specialists with expertise in the management of cancer and blood diseases making it the single largest practice of its type in Australia

Recently patient number 50000 was treated at the Mater Private Centre for Haematology amp Oncology which was opened in 1997 and the network of clinics continues to grow along with the reputation of HOCA as a leader in cancer care and research Their North Brisbane Cancer Centre at Chermside was officially opened on September 9 by Federal Treasurer The Hon Wayne Swan MP ushering in a new era of cancer care in Queensland The Gold Coast Cancer Centre at Southport is set to follow later this year with even further expansion planned for 2009
