History
Tucson Medical Center traces its roots to the worldfamous tuberculosis center the Desert Sanatorium which opened in 1927 The sanatoriums owners donated the facility to the people of Tucson during World War II and TMC was established as a community nonprofit hospital in 1943

A distinguishing feature of TMC over the years has been its buildings and grounds spread over 120 acres Private landscaped patios give every TMC patient a room with a view TMCs desert landscaped grounds also serve as home to the Tucson Orthopaedic Institute the Cancer Care Center of Southern Arizona HealthSouth Rehabilitation Institute of Tucson Encore Senior Village Birth and Womens Health Center and the Childrens Clinics for Rehabilitative Services a private nonprofit corporation affiliated with TMC and University Medical Center in Tucson

TMC is licensed for 642 adult pediatric and behavioral health beds The hospital serves more than 30000 inpatients and 122000 outpatients yearly and has several emphasis areas including maternal and child health cardiac care hospice care neuroscience orthopedics diagnostic services behavioral health and senior services TMC also created the regions first emergency department dedicated specifically for kids

The hospitals nearly than 1000 physicians represent 60 specialties from anesthesiology to vascular surgery Most of these physicians are board certified The physicians work closely with nursing and other hospital staff to ensure that every TMC patient receives quality care

History

TMC 60 Years of Growth


Tucson Medical Center traces its roots to the Desert Sanatorium a firstclass tuberculosis facility that opened in 1927 on 300 acres northeast of Tucson During World War II the sanatoriums owners donated the property in response to the communitys need for more hospital beds This remarkable act of philanthropy led to the establishment of TMC as a community notforprofit hospital

The first patient was admitted on November 9 1944 and since that time TMC has become one of the 300 largest hospitals in the United States TMCs history reflects the changes and challenges in the nations health care industry Through it all the hospital has contributed to the development of Tucson and Southern Arizona by maintaining its focus on providing quality service with a caring touch
