History

History
Our story really began over 60 years ago in response to the growing health care needs of Stanly County citizens

At the time Franklin D Roosevelt was inaugurated to an unprecedented fourth term as President and America was in the waning days of World War II

The year was 1945 And weve been making history of our own ever since

1945
In a letter to the editor in The Stanly News amp Press on March 27 an Albemarle resident first proposed the idea of building a single hospital to replace the outdated Yadkin Hospital and Stanly General Hospital

Financed by a combination of state and federal funds individual and industrial contributions foundation gifts and other assets the new facility was named Stanly County Hospital

A 35member board of trustees representing all sections of the county as well as various civic and veterans organizations was selected to oversee the daytoday operations

1950
Stanly County Hospital admitted its first patient on July 12 Dr WN McKenzie served as the first chief of staff and Joe S Lennon as the first administrator

1976
The need for a more uptodate facility became evident During that year a conference resulted in a plan to construct a 130bed replacement facility

It would be named Stanly Memorial Hospital in honor of those members of the armed services who had given their lives for their country

1979
The board of trustees and the medical staff accepted the plan for a replacement facility and construction began on March 28

1981
Patients began occupying the new Stanly Memorial Hospital on April 25 and the hospital was dedicated on May 24

1986
The old Stanly County Hospital building was imploded to make room for physician offices which now comprise Stanly Medical Plaza Only two sections of the old hospital were spared and are now housing physician practices

1987
Stanly Memorial opened a behavioral health unit on the third floor

1990
Due to substantial increases in outpatient surgery an outpatient center was added to the west end of the hospital in August

1991
An addition was made to the radiology department

1992
To better serve area business and industry Occupational Health Services was added to the service mix

1995
The Rehabilitation Center of Stanly Memorial Hospital a 10bed physical rehabilitation unit opened on the third floor and a second addition was made to the radiology department

1997
Stanly Memorial Hospital now a 119bed facility launched a fourphase expansion and renovation project in April to address space needs caused by increasing volumes in outpatient services

1998
During Phase I in the planned expansion the Emergency Department was renovated and expanded In Phase II a wing was added to the west end of the campus to house Outpatient Rehabilitation Services Occupational Health Information Systems and Human Resources

1999
An addition was created to accommodate AdministrativeFiscalSupport Services during Phase III

2000
The Family amp Education Center opened in Phase IV of the expansion This beautiful addition housed the new Womens Services area Special Events Center the Health Library and parking deck

At the same time the Roy M Hinson Cancer Center was also opened

2003
The opening of the Sleep Medicine Center at Stanly Memorial expanded the outpatient services of the hospital

2005
Stanly Memorial Hospital became tobaccofree Stanly Memorial also announced plans to develop the Western Stanly Outpatient Center in Locust

Accredited by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations JCAHO in October 2005

2006
Stanly Memorial Hospital changed its name to Stanly Regional Medical Center

2007
Stanly Regional Medical Center formed a strategic alliance with Carolinas Healthcare System and construction began on phase one of Stanly Regional West in Locust

Stanly Regional Medical Center designated as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology

2008

Stanly Regional West campus opened in the summer Center for Wound Care amp Hyperbaric Medicine will open in the fall

Stanly Regional Medical Center has earned the Gold Seal of Approval from the Joint Commission and is now designated as a certified Primary Stroke Center

2009
In 2009 Stanly Regional Medical Center and Carolinas HealthCare System CHS expanded their 15year relationship to strengthen health care in Stanly and Montgomery counties by entering into a management services agreement These management services will enable Stanly Regional to strengthen its focus on quality patient care and have available the resources of one of the largest and most respected health care organizations in the United States
