History

History of the Sabetha Community Hospital Inc
The Sabetha Community Hospital has been committed to improving quality of health and care given in their communities since 1904

December 12 1904
State Charter was received for the first Sabetha hospital The hospital was actually the home of Walt W Walker which had been purchased by Dr Sam Murdock The large home had seventeen plus rooms and sat on ten acres of land

1910
Construction began on the building where the Sabetha Community Hospital would be housed

1911
The hospital became a nurses residence and a nursing education program was implemented More than 200 nurses graduated from the program During this time the hospital was moved into the north wing of the current building by Dr Sam Murdock Dr Murdock owned the new hospital building

1920
Dr Sam Murdock relinquished ownership and management to the Sisters of St Joseph in Concordia Kansas and it was renamed St Anthonys Hospital

1930
Under the management of the Sisters of St Joseph the south wing was added which doubled the hospitals capacity

1966
A new hospital committee was formed of community members at a meeting held at the City Hall in Sabetha The committee named Dale Turner President Ralph Tennal Vice President and Iola Popkess Secretary Dan Aul Max Mock and Reo Strahm made up the executive committee Other committee members included Bernard Wiltz Harold Westrup Oscar Strahm Eli Meyer Warren Glace Leonard Edelman Alice Priest Mrs Henry Studer Gary Howard Harvey Bechtelheimer and Florence Lancaster Minutes reflect the committee formulated plans to begin soliciting funds to solve the hospitals financial dilemma

1967
The hospital committee members hired a professional fund raising firm The Cumberford Corporation of Kansas City Missouri to do a preliminary survey and begin raising funds from the residents of Sabetha and surrounding areas Under purchase agreement the Sisters of St Joseph relinquished ownership of the hospital The total amount of purchase price was 8256500

During this time Mr Robert Kelling was hired as the Administrator of the hospital and in May of 1967 the hospitals name changed from St Anthony Hospital to its current name Sabetha Community Hospital

In July of 1967 a fund raising campaign officially began to raise a goal of 25000 from the community Ralph Tennal was appointed as publicity chairman and Gary Howard as Auditor By September of 1967 the fundraising committee reported that it was within 22000 of reaching its initial fundraising goal By October 1967 total fundraising efforts hit 27248246 With payment made in full on the purchase of the hospital the Kansas Department of Health and Environment reissued new licensure

1971
Management of the Sabetha Community Hospital was leased to Great Plains Lutheran Hospital association which today is known as Great Plains health Alliance This partnership continues today

1981
The Sabetha Community Hospital expanded its services to bring a Physical Therapy department to the hospital

1981
Dr Kevin Kennally Dr Gregg Wenger and Dr John Yulich begin practicing in Sabetha

1990
The Sabetha Community Hospital enters into an employment agreement to manage the practices of Dr Wenger and Dr Kennally The practice will be called Sabetha Family Practice

1995
Formation of new 501c3 organization is completed for the Sabetha Community Hospital along with a fifteenyear lease from the City of Sabetha

1997
Dr James Longabaugh joins the Sabetha Family Practice Nemaha County Home Health Agency comes under the auspice of the Sabetha Community Hospital Cardiac Rehabilitation Mobile CT and MRI scans and numerous outpatient clinics come to Sabetha Community Hospital

1998
Longtime physician Dr John Yulich passes away Thanks to a private donation renovation of the labor and delivery room is completed

2001
On August 21st the citizens of Sabetha vote to authorize the use of general obligation bonds to underwrite a proposed 5 million dollar addition to the Sabetha Community Hospital which will house patient care and diagnostic services

The Board of Directors hires fundraising firm Jackson amp Associates to begin fundraising for a new 25000 square foot medical facility

2002
Alberici Healthcare is selected to build the Sabetha Community Hospital In midApril the ground is broke on the new hospital addition The building project is expected to be completed in 14 months On August 29th the last piece of steel framework is set into place

The Sabetha Community Hospital purchases a building on Main Street to house the Sabetha Family Practice and its physicians Dr Kerstin Glynn joins the Sabetha Community Hospital clinic staff later in the year

The Sabetha Community Hospitals ensuing campaign Project Healthcare Invest in Your Future begins with solicitation of donations from the hospital family which includes the physicians and medical staff In November 100 of the employees and physicians of the Sabetha Community Hospital commit to the campaign by pledging gifts in excess of 130000

2003
In July the Sabetha Community Hospital held its dedication and ribbon cutting at the new hospital facility Tours are given to the public

The new hospital facility allows the Sabetha Community Hospital to expand its services to include expanded laboratory services surgery inhouse CT Scans fluoroscopy and digital radiology

The hospital fundraising campaign Project Healthcare Invest in Your Future announces that it has raised more than 125 million in donations from the community Patient care moves into the new facility The original hospital building is used for outpatient services and administration

2004
Nemaha County Home Health a department of the Sabetha Community Hospital expands its services to provide Hospice to the communities of Northeastern Kansas

2007
Dr Chris Tramp joins the Sabetha Family Practice in practice alongside Dr Kennally Dr Wenger Dr Longabaugh and Dr Glynn Outpatient services continue to expand at the Sabetha Community Hospital

2009
The Sabetha Community Hospital joins other hospitals across the nation in becoming a smoke free environment Smoking is not allowed inside or outside of the hospital facility including the parking lots The policy also encompasses the Sabetha Family Practice
Quantum Installs a QRadDIGITAL DRX Series Radiographic System at St Marys Hospital in Waterbur
