Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville Illinois serves the residents of Morgan Cass Greene Scott and Macoupin counties in West Central Illinois The facility is located at 1600 West Walnut on Jacksonvilles west side

Passavant is staffed by 900 full and parttime employees and an active medical staff of 60 physicians The hospital is licensed for 93 patient beds

The hospital is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations JACHO and is a member of the American Hospital Association the Illinois Hospital Association IHA and the Voluntary Hospitals of America VHA

In 2006 Passavant was named one of the top two hospitals in Illinois and one of the top 10 percent in the nation to administer antibiotics 60 minutes prior to surgery by the IHA Passavant also received the 2006 Distinguished Hospital Award for Patient Safety from HealthGrades the nations leading independent healthcare ratings company

In May 2009 Passavant achieved the status of a Magnetreg Hospital from the American Nurses Credentialing Center

1875 Mrs Eliza Ayers donated property to the Rev WA Passavants Lutheran Association for Works of Mercy for use as hospital Two Lutheran deaconesses assigned to Jacksonville to care for patients

1891 Public campaign to modernize building

1896 Seven Sisters of the Holy Cross arrived to found Our Saviours Hospital on East State Street with bequest from Charles Routt

1898 Our Saviors building addition completed

1902 Passavant School of Nursing opened Two unused floors of Passavant remodeled into patient rooms and new surgery Our Saviours kitchen and laundry enlarged

1906 Local citizen corporation assumed control of Passavant Trustees appointed by 12 Protestant churches in Jacksonville the Aid Society the Association for Works of Mercy and the medical profession

1912 Xray departments added at both hospitals

1913 Nichols Nursing home built at Passavant

1916 Passavant Memorial Hospital Association received title to the hospital
property from Lutheran Association

1920 Pavilion Wing constructed at Passavant

1921 Ground broken for addition to Our Saviours

1925 Isolation building opened at Passavant

1945 319000 raised in community campaign to modernize Passavant Project
postponed by material shortages and high costs

1949 Second funds drive raised balance of 700000 required to secure
government grants of nearly one and onehalf million dollars to build new
hospital

1950 Passavant ownership extended to Protestant churches of fivecounty
area

1953 New 140bed Passavant opened on West Walnut Street

1958 Construction started on Our Saviours building addition financed by
gifts grants and loans Oldest parts of plant leveled New School of
Nursing built at Passavant Sixteen patient rooms added at Passavant

1964 Our Saviours renamed Holy Cross Hospital

1967 Building expansion at Passavant enlarged emergency and patient service
areas

1968 Unified community hospital system created by union of Holy Cross and
Passavant ownership held by all churches of fivecounty area through
membership in Passavant Memorial Area Hospital Association Holy Cross
building became Frank A Norris Unit

1973 Patient rooms remodeled at Norris and physical plant modernized

1975 Major addition to Passavant completed housing enlarged outpatient
emergency and diagnostic and treatment departments Financed by gifts and
loans

1979 Ground broken for 102 million addition to Passavant

1981 South Addition at Passavant dedicated housing new surgical suite
intensive and coronary care units and two new nursing units Patient care
at Norris Unit discontinued

1982 Closed School of Nursing in conjunction with MacMurray Colleges
establishment of BAN program

1983 Norris facility sold to MacMurray College Renovated Radiology
Department and acquired leased CT scanner Remodeled Pediatrics with funds
provided by Auxiliary

1984 Remodeled OB unit developed birthing room Revised corporation
bylaws reduced number of Trustees from 24 to 16
