Mercy Medical has served the Gulf Coast region since 1949 when the Sisters of Mercy founded Villa Mercy The once convalescent home that served the elderly of Baldwin and Mobile counties has grown far beyond its original concept evolving into a continuum of care serving the healthcare needs of all ages Founded and sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy and as a member of Catholic Health East Mercy Medical is committed to its mission of continuing the healing ministry of Jesus Christ providing compassionate holistic and excellent care

History
1949 Villa Mercy convalescent home is established in Daphne Alabama

1964 A 54bed nursing home opens following receipt of 250000 Federal grant under the HillBurton Act

1975 Villa Mercy expands to 137 beds changing its emphasis to the model of rehabilitation and therapy services

1979 Inpatient hospice services are established

1981 Home health services are established in Baldwin and Mobile counties

1984 A State pilot project is implemented for the rehabilitation subacute program

1987 Villa Mercy changes its name to MERCY MEDICAL
Mercy Medical purchases The Birches in Fairhope assisted living community

1988 Mercy Medical receives licensure of 25 beds as an acute rehabilitation hospital

1992 Rehab hospital built to include skilled nursing and therapy services

1993 Mercy Medical Mobile 20bed skilled nursing and hospice unit opens on Dauphin Street

McAuley Place 60unit assisted living community opens on Dauphin Street in Mobile

Portier Place 30apartment Lifecare retirement community opens on Old Shell Road in Mobile

Care Resource Center is established in cooperation with Senior Citizens Services Inc Mobile

1998 Pediatric Home Care program established in both Mobile and Baldwin counties

1999 Mercy Medical receives exemption from Medicare PPS
11 apartments added to Carroll Place Fairhope formerly The Birches making a total of 71 units

2001 Mercy Medical receives extension of exemption from Medicare PPS and is awarded a demonstration project from CMSThe Hamlet Lifecare retirement community opens First Phase 9 cottages amp The Clubhouse in Fairhope

2002 Carroll Place opens addition making a total of 99 unitsCatherine Place in Daphne 60unit assisted living community openedThe Second Phase 9 cottages of The Hamlet opens in FairhopeCare Resource Center in Mobile is closed
