History

HISTORY OF MEDINA HOSPITAL
Medina Community Hospital opened on October 22 1944 The hospital was originally the fourbedroom home of the Theodore Weidner family In 1936 the Weidners youngest son was stricken with a serious illness requiring roundtheclock medical attention Mr Weidner then vowed that if his son recovered he would sell the house for conversion into a hospital A group of publicspirited Medina citizens helped that pledge become a reality by starting a fundraising campaign to buy and convert the home Today more than 300 physicians are members of the Medical Staff covering more than 40 areas of specialization

Medina Community Hospital opened during WWII with a modest 35 beds dual surgical suites a single Xray camera and an emergency room that was little more than a first aid station The 20000 squarefoot facility only had an 8member physician staff and 30 employees Dr Lynn Mansell was the first Chief of the Medical Staff

Physical expansion and service growth has come to the Hospital with regularity throughout its history The Hospital underwent its most dramatic change from 1989 to 1991 which entailed a 22 million expansion and renovation affecting virtually every department Much of the renovation enlarged outpatient departments where tremendous growth had been witnessed in the last decade With that construction the Hospital also underwent a name change to Medina General Hospital to more closely align the health care facility with the wide range of services provided

In 1980 and 1994 physician medical office buildings were built adjacent to the Hospital to accommodate the growing number of physicians to the Medical Staff Today more than 300 physicians are members of the Medical Staff covering more than 40 areas of specialization

In March 1999 a third major construction project was completed to accommodate patient needs in a rapidly growing community This addition made room for new diagnostic equipment and enlarged space for several patient care areas The south enlarged the Surgery Department and provided new space for the Laboratory a 12bed Intensive Care Unit and the Family Birthing Center which features four private rooms and 11 LDRP suites where labor delivery recovery and postpartum care all occur in one room

A satellite facility the Brunswick Medical Campus offers a variety of medical services including an Immediate Care Center Lab Radiology Open MRI CT ultrasound and pediatric therapy services

Medina General Hospital and Cleveland Clinic officially affiliated on August 31 2009 becoming the ninth regional hospital in the Cleveland Clinic system As part of the affiliation agreement the name of the hospital changed to Medina Hospital

Today Medina Hospital is a modern 116bed hospital in a setting close to home for the residents of the community
