OUR MISSION

The mission of the Hospital for Joint Diseases is to

1 Provide the highest quality of surgical and therapeutic care in the treatment rehabilitation and prevention of musculoskeletal rheumatic immunological neurological and other related diseases and injuries

2 Ensure that the interest and safety of all patients in the Hospital take precedence over all other concerns through the implementation of reliable quality assessment and continuous quality improvement mechanisms involving interactive communication among the Medical Staff the Office of President the Board of Trustees and the entire HJD Patient Care Community

3 Provide special care to all patients for whom such care is uniquely available at HJD consistent with the Patients Bill of Rights

4 Pursue the basic and applied studies of the musculoskeletal immunological and neurological systems of the body and to advance the understanding of these studies

5 Provide major educational programs in orthopaedic surgery rheumatology molecular medicine neurology epilepsy seizure disorder parkinsonism functional and stereotactic neurosurgery bioengineering and biomechanics which includes a major emphasis on academic research as well as clinical training

6 Explore and develop innovative and model programs in the

Special and comprehensive treatment training and education to neurologically and developmentally impaired children
Study and treatment of pain
Study of workplace injuries and the restoration of injured and disabled workers to productive lives
Understanding and application of imaging and pathological diagnosis in the institutions specialty areas

7 Assure that the highest possible standards of medical professionalism are practiced in the Hospital through continuous medical educational and quality assessments of each physicians privileges and practices in the Hospital

8 Recruit employ and promote without regard for race creed sexual preference or national origin

9 Promote among all employees attitudes of compassion concern and respect for privacy for patients and their families

10 Provide a work environment which reflects fair compensation the opportunity for advancement and worker safety


History

History
NYU Langone Medical Center and the Hospital for Joint Diseases HJD share a rich history spanning HJDs academic affiliation with the NYU School of Medicine in 1986 its clinical association with the NYU Langone Medical Center in 1994 the fusion of the two orthopaedic departments in 1997 and the integration of the rheumatology programs in 2001 On January 1 2006 NYU Langone Medical Center and HJD merged with HJD becoming NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases

The former HJD was founded in 1905 by the brothers Henry and Herman Frauenthal physicians with the mission of quotbringing relief through care to the orthopaedic problems of childrenquot Once known as the Jewish Hospital for Deformities and Joint Diseases the facility was originally a small clinic of seven beds in a brownstone building on Lexington Avenue in upper Manhattan Within a year it had moved into larger quarters at 1919 Madison Avenue Soon after that six contiguous brownstones were purchased connected and converted into the Hospital for Joint Diseases

For seventyfive years the hospital remained at its uptown location expanding gradually over the years In 1979 it moved into its present quarters a large new building erected on the corner of Second Avenue and 17th Street in the Gramercy Park neighborhood of Manhattan reflecting the hospitals expanding commitment to specialized patient care research and medical education
