VA Butler Healthcare provides primary care behavioral health specialized extended care physical rehabilitation medicine and residential substance abuse treatment serving over 18000 veterans in western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio The facility operates 60 nursing home care beds 10 compensated work therapy and 56 domiciliary beds The outpatient programs generate approximately 125000 visits per year Specialized care is available through the following programs respite care homeless veterans program mental hygiene clinic home based primary care community health care hospice and adult day health care

VA Butler Healthcares facility is located on an 88acre campus three miles northwest of Butler PA on Route 356 New Castle Road The medical center is part of the VA Healthcare VISN 4 network which includes 9 other VA facilities in Pennsylvania Delaware and West Virginia

History

History
VA Butler Healthcares history began in 1937 when the Pennsylvania Department of Health chose Butler as the site for a Tuberculosis Sanitarium The Charles J Robson farm was purchased for 300 per acre The cornerstone was laid in December 1938 and the building was completed in 1940

During WWII the hospital served as a Soldiers hospital and in 1942 the US Army Medical Department leased the property and renamed it Deshon General Hospital named for Colonel George Durfee Deshon At one point the facility hosted 1000 beds for military patients In April 1946 the Veteran Administration started its operation and purchased the facility in 1948

VA Butler Healthcare has made many changes to meet the needs of the Veteran and by 1964 the hospital changed to a general medical and surgical facility As the needs to serve the Veteran continue to change the VA Butler Healthcare is dedicated to adapt to those needs for today and into the future
