History

Alton Memorial Hospital was founded on a dream During the 1920s a woman named Alice E Smith widow of William E Smith founder of the Illinois Glass Company in Alton Illinois dreamed of building a fullservice modern hospital to serve the community that she called home for most of her life

Smith died in 1931 but her dream lived on through her two daughters Eunice Smith of Alton and Ellen Smith Hatch of Springfield Illinois In 1936 Eunice Smith and Ellen Smith Hatch founded the hospital and gave it to the community as a memorial to their father and mother Ground was broken for Alton Memorial Hospital on September 20 1936 and the building was dedicated November 2 1937

Alton Memorial underwent four major expansions between 1942 and 1977 increasing the total number of beds to 222 In 1966 a freestanding 64bed extended care facility the Eunice Smith Home was opened 1994 brought a new hightech surgical center and emergency department In1997 the hospital unveiled its new Family Birth Center

Today Alton Memorial Hospital is a JCAHOaccredited fullservice hospital serving the River Bend area of southwestern Illinois The hospital offers a wide range of quality health care services including the areas only balloon angioplasty program open MRI through Twin Rivers MRI Center CT services PET imaging and nuclear medicine and other advanced medical imaging services as well as cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation The hospital also operates a 24hour emergency center and the areas only hospitalbased ambulance service

Alton Memorial Hospital is recognized for its heart services orthopedic surgery oncology services womens health services outpatient surgery and testing gastroenterology pain management pulmonary medicine rehabilitation and sports medicine The hospital provides numerous health education and wellness programs to the people of Alton Illinois and the surrounding communities
