History
The Royal Alexandra Hospital for Sick Children affectionately known as The Alex was officially opened in 1881 by their Royal Highnesses the Prince and Princess of Wales but its history goes back further than that to 1868 when the original Brighton childrens hospital opened in a private house in Western Road Brighton

In the ensuing years the Alex became arguably Brightons bestloved hospital

It has a long history of progressive and innovative paediatric care embracing medicine nursing and related professions paediatric nurse training and research

In June 2007 the new hospital opened on the Royal Sussex County Hospital site the stateoftheart facility has won an international design award and continues with offering pioneering paediatric care

It provides inpatient facilities including intensive care and outpatient care for children

This site has a 24hour emergency care service for children referred by GPs and other specialists
