During the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century a larger hospital was built in the middle of the town The personnel consisted of nine male wardens eighteen female wardens and two lunatic nurses for the mentally ill patients With the appointment of two town physicians the Hospital started employing trained medical personnel

Professionalisation of medical education
In 1732 one part of the hospital which had already 650 beds burned completely down Fortunately there was no damage to the adjacent buildings The first Anatomical Theatre was built on the ruins and provided medical education for physicians and surgeons

In 1782 a group of physicians founded the Medical Surgical Institute thus initiating university education for physicians in Zurich Twentyone years later the Canton Zurich took over the Hospital and the Institute For the first time the Canton was responsible for the provision of medical services and medical training The Medical Faculty of the University of Zurich was founded in 1833
