Programme to be initiated to boost organ donations

To give a boost to the organ donation programme in PGIMER authorities are thinking of setting up a network for organ sharing with public sector institutes

A network between hospitals for sharing donated organs on the basis of urgency exists in South India and in Western countries like USA In the near future PGI may set up a similar network with AIIMS Delhi RR Hospital Delhi and other tertiary care hospitals in the region

To create awareness about organ donation and its importance in saving lives of critically ill patients the Department of Hepaetology PGIMER is organsing a public forum on April 7 to create awareness among doctors paramedical staff including nurses and technicians students patients patients relatives and the general public

Dr R K Dhiman department of hepaetology said PGI is going to start the organ donation awareness drive in a big way and activities are lined up ahead to give boost to the noble cause

Despite India passing the Transplantation of Human Organs Act that legalises the concept of brain death and facilitated organ procurement from these donors people in India particularly in the North are reluctant to come forward for organ donation

On average PGI gets one brain dead person everyday yet due to lack of awareness the relatives do not come forward to donate the patients organs

Dr Ajay Duseja said Organs from one donor can save or help as many as 50 people

Dr Arunanshu Behra leading transplant surgeon at PGI from the department of surgery said Approximately 2830 patients are declared brain dead every month Even if 20 per cent of them opt for organ donation the demand and supply gap will be filed up to an extent

Contrary to this relatives of only two patients had come forward during last one year for liver donations of brain dead patient she added
