Dr Agarwals Eye Hospital ties up with US based Wilmer Eye Institute King Khaled Eye Hospital of Sa

The Chennai based Dr Agarwals Eye Hospital a onestopshop for eye care will shortly join hands with the internationally acclaimed Wilmer Eye Institute of the John Hopkins University in US and the King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital in Saudi Arabia to expand its services line mainly on retinal surgeries and to take its researches in the field forward said Dr Amar Agarwal CMD of the hospitals group

While briefing pressmen on the sidelines of the one day Reticon a demonstration cum symposium on vitreo retinal surgery in Chennai he said as part of the hospital chains expansion the next centre in India will come up in Cuttack in Orissa The symposium was organised by the hospitals special arm Dr Agarwals Retina Foundation

Later while speaking to Pharmabiz Dr Amar Agarwal the vitreo retinal specialist said by Glued Intra Ocular Lens Surgery Glued IOL a technique developed by him the lens is fixed permanently without causing any irritation or side effects The glue used in fixing the lens is not any chemical substance but a tissue from human blood and no suture is required The doctor said this IOL surgery can be performed on any person without any age limit and even on a child born with cataract Further it will correct all damages in the eye lens caused due to an accident or fire crackers

The Reticon gave a stern admonition to those patients suffering from diabetes that every diabetic should consult an eye doctor every six months because they are more vulnerable to diabetic retinopathy In India the number of diabetic population is over 50 million and the number of blinds is 18 million If the disease affecting the retina is diagnosed in the beginning it could be addressed easily So it is necessary for all the diabetics to get their eyes checked on a regular basis The symposium featured presentations on vitreo retinopathy by eminent retinal surgeons from across the globe and witnessed a live Glued IOL surgery televised from the operation theatre of Dr Agarwals hospital

While inaugurating the seminar Tamil Nadu Tourism Minister S Gokula Indira said the government has tied up with leading private hospitals in the state in order to provide free treatment for the poor patients under Chief Ministers health scheme She said government is planning to make the facilities in the government hospitals on par with international standards and for that purpose a Public Private Partnership in medical line has been introduced According to the minister 50 per cent of the medical tourists coming to India visit Chennai and avail healthcare benefits from the hospitals and wellness centres here

Dr Neera Kanjani medical director Dr Agarwals Eye Hospital in Bangalore said diabetes causes severe problems to retina and the country needs more retinal doctors to check the myriad complications affecting it According to her by controlling diabetes the retinal ailments can be checked to an extent

The hospital chain which has 13 centres in Chennai city alone has separate branches in Villupuram Kumbakonam Neyveli Panruti Tiruvallur Vellore Kanchipuram Hosur Krishnagiri Erodu Dharmapuri Salem Tirunelveli Madurai and Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu Centres in other states include Jaipur in Rajasthan Bangalore in Karnataka and Chittoor and Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh

Dr Agarwals Retina Foundation has so far performed 900 IOL surgeries free of cost out of which 300 were under the Chief Ministers health scheme

The symposium was attended by besides its CMD Dr Adithya Agarwal director of the hospital eminent vitreo retinal specialist Dr Fernando Arivalo from US and Ophthalmologists from various parts of the country The symposium served as a Continuous Medical Education program to update the knowledge of vitreo retinal specialists with the recent developments in the retinal disease and in its management
