Die Initiative in Opladen ein Krankenhaus zu errichten ging von der katholischen Pfarrgemeinde St Remigius aus Um das noumltige Kapital fuumlr einen Neubau zu gewinnen verkaufte die Gemeinde das so genannte Alte Kloster in der Altstadtstraszlige den bisherigen Mittelpunkt der ambulanten Krankenpflege Schenkungen frommer Buumlrger finanzielle Hilfen der Stadtverwaltung und einzelner Industrieunternehmen fuumlllten den Baufonds rasch so dass in der Rennbaumstraszlige heute An St Remigius gebaut werden konnte Das neue dem heiligen Josef geweihte Krankenhaus wurde am 20 Februar 1891 eroumlffnet Die Krankenpflege uumlbernahmen die in Opladen schon laumlnger erfolgreich taumltigen Schwestern des Ordens der Armen Dienstmaumlgde Jesu Christi

Nach dem Zusammenschluss Opladens mit Leverkusen im Jahre 1975 sollten Verwechslungen mit dem Leverkusener StJosefKrankenhaus vermieden werden Folglich uumlbernahm das Krankenhaus den Namen des Pfarrpatrons St Remigius und hieszlig dann RemigiusKrankenhausOpladen Seit dem 1 Mai 2009 heiszligt das Haus nun St Remigius Krankenhaus Opladen
