History

History
The Queen Elizabeth Hospital was built in 1954 as an urgent postwar project to cope with the needs of the rapidly developing western suburbs of Adelaide

Although the original intention was to build a general public hospital planning was extended to include a maternity wing The hospital received its first maternity patient on 6 September 1954 and for the next four years accepted only maternity patients while the general hospital was being constructed A ceremony to officially open the hospital was performed by Her Majesty The Queen Mother on 5th March 1958 however it was not until 3 May 1959 following completion of the general hospital building that the hospital accepted its first general patient

On 24th March 1954 Her Majesty the Queen by special proclamation granted permission for the hospital to be named The Queen Elizabeth Hospital and it remains the only hospital in the British world to be named as such

It was the second hospital in Australia to be honoured with the granting of a Coat of Arms from the College of Arms London On the Coat of Arms it reads Petimus Docemus Curamus We Seek We Teach We Heal which reflects the philosophy of the hospital
