New scanner to provide more precise diagnoses
New scanner to provide more precise diagnoses

WAs Health Minister says a new CT scanner at Princess Margaret Hospital will result in quicker and more precise diagnoses of illnesses

The 19 million piece of equipment is the fastest scanner in the world and the first of its kind in Australia

It can perform a scan in under one second

Kim Hames says the quick scan times means that most children will no longer need a general anaesthetic before having a scan

It means that children that come into the emergency department with some sort of injury say a head injury where you need to have a scan often youd be waiting five or six hours until youre waiting for the anaesthetic he said

This means the scan can be done quickly and easily

Dr Hames thanked the childrens charity Telethon which contributed one third of the funding for the equipment

It is a first for Western Australia in fact first in a childrens hospital in the world so that is a great achievement for this hospital and our combined efforts
