Hospital fitness judged to treat Tymoshenko

BERLIN Two German doctors were in Ukraine to evaluate whether a hospital there is equipped to treat jailed opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko for a back complaint a spokeswoman said yesterday Accompanied by a German government representative the doctors visited the state hospital in Ukraines second city Kharkiv on Friday the spokeswoman from their German university clinic said
The head of the Charite clinic Karl Max Einhaeupl and the head of its orthopaedic unit Norbert Haas also visited Tymoshenko at her Kharkiv prison she said adding that the clinic would issue a report in the coming days The former prime minister who is serving a sevenyear prison sentence after being convicted of abusing power while in office in February refused to be treated in prison and demanded medical care in Germany
Kiev agreed early this month to allow Tymoshenko to leave jail to be treated in a Ukrainian hospital but she wants to be assured that the Kharkiv hospital is equipped to carry out the treatment prescribed by the German doctors A report by one of the doctors was leaked in the Ukrainian press late last month stating that Tymoshenko had a slipped disc and needed immediate hospitalisation in a specialised clinic outside her prison
The figurehead of Ukraines proWestern Orange Revolution of 2004 was detained in August last year and jailed in October over her signing of a series of gas deals with Russia considered unfavourable to UkraineTymoshenko is now being investigated in a number of other probes AFP
